Three ways to make the estimate better

  1. Measure average draw. A plug-in power meter over several days is more useful than the maximum printed on a power supply.
  2. Count the whole system. Include switches, storage, cooling and any second server that runs continuously.
  3. Test a schedule. Compare 24/7 operation with overnight shutdowns or low-power standby before buying new hardware.

Turn the result into a decision

Power-cost questions

How do I calculate home-server electricity cost?

Multiply watts divided by 1,000 by hours per day and days per year, then multiply by your electricity price per kWh. Add the number of identical systems.

Should I use the power supply rating?

No. Use the average draw measured at the wall if possible; the rating on a power supply is a maximum capability, not the usual consumption.

Can a calculator estimate a variable tariff?

It can give a useful baseline, but a variable tariff needs the actual rate periods and should be compared with your bill.
